Dexed free FM synthesizer + 3,000 presets

Yesterday I wrote about the new synthesizer Helm, here today it’s time for another open source project – Dexed by Digital Suburban.

This free synthesizer Dexed is a multi platform and multi format instrument plugin thought of as a clone of the famous DX7 vintage FM-based digital synthesizer manufactured by the Yamaha Corporation from 1983 to 1989. Dexed’s synth engine is built on music-synthesizer-for-android, a music synthesizer and sequencer for Android for live performances and recording.

Besides its destination as virtual instrument by itself, the target of this project is to be a companion of the original DX7. That’s why, in addition to a very convincing sound character shown in plenty of presets, Dexed offers SysEx compatibility with the original synthesizer. This operation is straightforward and provides all the sound parameters on one screen, programming sounds being so easy.

    Audio demo:

A reader of ours complained yesterday that Helm has no factory presets, which makes it uninteresting. We can not help him in this regard, but we can prevent this problem today, adding a link with a pack with 3,000 (yes, three thousand) .SYX presets from the original DX7 synth, that you can easily import within the software plugin. First, download the soundbank here.

In the tutorial below, see step by step how to install these presets.

How to add SYX presets to Dexed

    [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][fusion_tabs design=”clean” layout=”horizontal” justified=”yes” backgroundcolor=”” inactivecolor=”” bordercolor=”” class=”” id=””][fusion_tab title=”Step 1″ icon=””]

    Open Dexed and click CART

    [/fusion_tab][fusion_tab title=”Step 2″ icon=””]

Then click SHOW DIR. A window with the presets folder will open. Leave it opened.[/fusion_tab][fusion_tab title=”Step 3″ icon=””]

Locate your newly downloaded and extracted presets (the 3,000 SYX files).[/fusion_tab][fusion_tab title=”Step 4″ icon=””]

Select all banks, copy and paste them into the previously opened window – more precisely, the Cartridges folder.[/fusion_tab][fusion_tab title=”Step 5″ icon=””]

Back to FL Studio, open a new instance of Dexed and click CART again. All folders containing the banks will appear.[/fusion_tab][fusion_tab title=”Step 6″ icon=””]

Double click on each SYX file to load presets.[/fusion_tab][/fusion_tabs]

You may feel the presets a little plain/ dry, so I recommend you to use some external effects such as reverb, delay, etc.

Currently the project is at version 0.9 , I am sure many surprising things will be added to future versions. Dexed is available for Mac and PC, 32 and 64-bit versions.

    4. Wonderful VST with presets. I am using CASIO CT-X9000in to play with the nice sounds..btw I am just starting to learn keyboard

    5. I noticed on REAPER that to modify a sound on DEXED or OXEFMSYNTH or HELM – or I suppose any other software synth. The UI option at the top changes ALL THE KNOBS to Mouse Operated Sliders.
