Free Samples and Plugins Roundup (February 2018)

Usually, February is not so active in terms of samples or plugins, whether free or commercial, all developers taking a little break after the holiday madness.

But this month is still quite attractive to freebie hunters, so I thought to include all releases that weren’t featured on this site yet. Here’s what this is about.

Ghost Syndicate have announced their Soviet Grooves, a free collection of sampled jazz and funk loops. The pack includes 36 drum & groove loops in BPM range of 64-180, 10 stabs and 5 vinyl sounds. It is not clear if the sounds are royalty free, you should ask the guys about this, but I think it worth downloading the loops and taking a test drive in FL Studio.

LoudMax is a free brickwall loudness maximizer plugin with a clean transparent sound. Free, of course. The news about it: v1.20 released with some important bug fixes and improves. With LoudMax you retain the original character of the music as much as possible even at high compression levels. This fantastic tool is available for Windows and Mac OS (VST/AU 32- & 64-bit), plus there’s a Winamp plugin to test.

There are more free plugins this month. Three more from Bakuage, namely BasicComp, ITDPanner and DRAnalyzer. In order of appearance, a compressor for mastering, vocal & drum tracks, a panner that preserves the original sound quality, as well as a spectrum analyzer that can analyze the dynamic range for each band. I like their GUI’s, the quality, highly recommended, so grab ’em and have fun.

Bigcat Instruments were out of control last week, when they released every day a new free collection of Kontakt patches. Presented in the style of 90’s when samples on CD’s were the standard, you have access to 5 packs (“in downloadable form to save the cost of postage or anything else”). Expect some cool keys, flutes, brasses, choral instruments and strings. Each Kontakt instrument patch has built-in reverb, equalizer and envelope controls.

Xenakios has released PaulXStretch, free plugin for extreme time-stretching and other spectral processing of audio material. The plugin is only suitable for radical transformation of sounds and is perfect for ambient music and sound design. This tool is for Windows and Mac OS.

Autodafe’s Mega Drum Machines Collection has been updated to version 2. They added multi-out option for all kits and 8 new drum kits (chiptune, Doepfer A-100 Modular and Alesis D4 & EMU Drumulator). This drum library started some times ago as a personal project and evolved into a huge collection of samples from 166 drum machines.

Brittle is VST/AU instrument plugin, free by courtesy of Flintpope. Brittle features 16 presets that make it capable of surreal soundscapes, dramatic ambiences and sound design experiments.

Last but not least, let’s take a look at Earcandy Gratis Male Voices, a free software recreation (NI Kontakt) of the classic choir sound from 1981 E-mu Emulator sampler instrument. All 49 keys were sampled and looped at the exact same loop points as the original. Some of the original parameters are included in the GUI, plus additional ADSR envelope for both the upper and lower sounds and a simple reverb module.
