Minimal Instruments has announced the release of Raijin, a free drum pad ROMpler instrument plugin for Windows and MacOS.
Its developers say Raijin is an EDM oriented drum pad instrument with a futuristic interface – high contrast with “neon” accents. Its main characteristic is the set of 12 individual drum pads, each with its own Volume, Pan and Attack controls. The plugin also sports 4 built-in master knobs for Volume, Reverb, Pitch and a “?” parameter that acts like a filter cutoff.
At this moment, there are 7 drum kits included (6 EDM oriented kits, 1 acoustic kit). Future expansion kits will be expected in the near future – they may be commercially available. Since we brought up the commercial aspect, it is good to know that this plugin is free for a short period of time. Create an account at Minimal Instruments, then download the version you need. Next, add a free license to cart, checkout, and save the license code you receive by email (you may need it later, at the next update etc).
So what’s my opinion about Raijin? I will not be mean and say is just another drum pad ROMpler created on Maize, although what stands out is only the interface. In terms of sound, I can’t say is something impressive, there are some cool toms and snares, it lacks of punchy kicks, the hi-hats are too experimental – I would say the sound of Raijin is a niche sound. With a fairly large margin of error, Raijin is suitable for EDM, dubstep, electropop and minimal glitch.
