Is Autogun the Best Free Synth for Making Trap Beats?

I just released a video tutorial of Autogun which is a native Image-Line synth which comes with all versions of FL Studio (Fruity Edition, Producer Edition etc), and features over 4 BILLION presets. It’s also available as a free download on the Image-Line website and seems to be compatible with only windows at the moment.

In the video, I simply did a walkthrough of the plugin and its functions, but I want to do a bit more of a review for those of you who aren’t familiar with the synth.

First of all, the user interface is extremely bare bones and simple to use. To me, this is sort of the beauty of the plugin. There’s no list of presets because there are just too many. As a result, you have to scroll through and just hope to find a cool preset. The good news is there are enough cool presets that you shouldn’t have to scroll for too long. The bad news is that a lot of the presets start to sound pretty similar.

Chances are you’ll find some pretty great sounding plucks, bells, and various other ambient and metallic sounds which is why I think it’s great for trap music. Once you’ve found a preset you like there’s very little ability to tweak the preset in Autogun. However, if you have Ogun (another FL Studio plugin), you can load the preset number from Autogun into Ogun, and tweak the preset that way. I’d also recommend saving your favorite presets, because if you don’t, they’ll probably be lost forever.

Whether or not this plugin is actually the best free synth for making trap beats is definitely debatable. I think people tend to love it or hate it, but either way, I personally think this plugin is a pretty great free option for beginners who are interested in making trap music.
